Major General Motors Recall

General Motors informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week that it would recall more than 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. that may experience a sudden loss of electric power steering assist. GM says drivers will know if the electric power steering system fails because a chime and dashboard message will appear. The car can be steered without power assist, but it can require a lot more muscle to turn the wheel, especially at low speeds. Because of the difficulty, the car could be more susceptible to a crash.

The total number of cars recalled during 2014 is, as of April 1, 6.26 million. The fault within the ignition switch had been known to GM for at least a decade prior to the recall being declared.  The company is facing multiple investigations into why it did not attempt to fix these faulty ignitions sooner, including a federal criminal probe and has been requested to testify before Congress. Several accidents and deaths have been attributed to these faulty parts which GM has been using knowingly for over a decade. Furthermore, it has been reported that GM could have fixed the defective switch for as little as 57 cents per vehicle.

At this point, there have been several hundred accidents that have been attributed to the faulty switch as well as several individuals who have lost their lives. Automakers have a legal duty to produce cars that are safe, and promptly notify and correct any known safety defects.
