A recently published study by the National Institute of Environmental Health & Sciences has shown that there is a strong correlation between some of the chemicals in many hair relaxing and straightening products and multiple health conditions including Uterine Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, and Uterine Fibroids with a Hysterectomy. These products contain formaldehyde, phthalates, and bisphenol-A which are all very harmful and are what the study links to the cancer.

Am I AT RISK?

Anyone who uses these products (see full list of affected products below) is at risk of cancer. The primary consumers of them are African American and Hispanic women. A study Published by the Environmental Working Group highlighted that 1 in 12 beauty care products sold to Black women contain these toxic chemicals. Hair Care Products were among the most dangerous.

Another Study by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute where researchers followed 34,000 women over a 10 year period found that those who routinely use relaxers were almost 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with uterine cancer by age 70 compared to those who’ve never used it.
