Samuel Pond Receives Barbara Rahke Community Ally Award

December 10, 2013

On Saturday, December 7th, Pond Lehocky Partner Samuel Pond was awarded the Barbara Rahke Community Ally Award by the United Steelworkers Union USW Local 10-1. Mr. Pond received the award for his efforts on behalf of the Pennsylvania Association for Justice (PAJ) to prevent the closure of two Philadelphia-area refineries, saving 1,700 jobs and helping to protect thousands more. The ceremony was held at USW Local 10-1’s second annual Jim McHugh Memorial Awards Night and Celebration Dinner at Penn’s Landing Caterers/Sheet Metal Workers Local 19 Hall.

Shortly after Labor Day in 2012, Sunoco announced its intention to get out of the refining business and put its local refineries up for sale; the refineries would have been closed without a buyer, eliminating thousands of jobs in the Philadelphia area. However, Sam Pond’s efforts on behalf of the PAJ along with the efforts of other local figures and organizations helped prevent the closure of the refineries and preserved the livelihood of thousands of local workers.

The Barbara Rahke Community Ally Award is named for Barbara Rahke, executive director of Philaposh, the non-profit organization that educates workers about job safety. The award is presented each year to community organizations that play large roles in labor issues.
