The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a nationwide alert following a significant E. coli outbreak linked to ground beef products distributed by Wolverine Packing Co. Over 167,000 pounds of ground beef are now being recalled after a sample tested positive for E. coli O157. Tragically, this outbreak has resulted in one death and 15 hospitalizations, all reported from Minnesota. These ground beef products were distributed nationwide, however, and so we are expecting to see more cases arise in other states.

What You Need to Know about the Ground Beef E. Coli Outbreak
The contaminated products were shipped to restaurants nationwide and may still be stored in restaurant refrigerators or freezers. If consumed, they can cause severe illness, with symptoms such as intense stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. While many individuals recover within a week, some, especially children and older adults, can develop life-threatening complications like kidney failure.
This outbreak has raised significant concerns for public safety, as illnesses have already been reported in states like Minnesota, where testing confirmed the presence of E. coli in a ground beef sample collected on November 20. Affected fresh products have a “use by” date of November 14, while frozen products bear a production date of October 22. All impacted products are marked with establishment number EST. 2574B within the USDA inspection seal.
