The medical device lawyers at Pond Lehocky are investigating claims on behalf of diabetes patients who have suffered serious injuries or been hospitalized due to defective OmniPod 5 Systems. The manufacturer of the device, Insulet Corporation, has issued a recall for affected lots that have been distributed in the United States.
When Insulet initiated the voluntary recall in March 2026, the company noted that a manufacturing defect can cause a small tear in the Pod’s internal tubing. This can result in insulin leaking inside the device, leading to underdelivery of insulin. The system may or may not trigger an alarm or alert when this occurs.
Without enough insulin, people with diabetes can suffer:
- Severe Hyperglycemia
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Diabetic Coma
- Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State (HHS)
- Loss of Consciousness
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
- Death
According to Insulet, there have been 29 reports of serious adverse events associated with this device failure.
