How To Be An Ally In The Workplace

When you’re an ally and can encourage others to come together as one it can create a positive and powerful work environment for everyone to thrive in. Being an ally is pertinent to encompassing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture where different types of people are celebrated, and disadvantages are not only identified but tackled. At Pond Lehocky Giordano, we believe allyship encompasses being a champion, a confidant, and an advocate.

Be a champion

  • Ask question about specific topics you don’t know about to employees with subject matter expertise.
  • Advocate for more women, people of color, and other underrepresented groups.
    •      If you know some one from an underrepresent group who’d be a good fit for an open position, recommend them (after asking first).

Be a confidant

  • Listen and ask question when someone is describing an experience you may not have had.
  • Believe others’ experiences and maintain an open-door policy.

Be an advocate

  • Ask if someone from an underrepresented group would want to collaborate on a proposal or project.
  • Offer to introduce colleagues from underrepresented groups to influential people within your network.
