At Pond Lehocky Giordano, we’re excited to recognize another outstanding student through our 25 Days of Scholarships initiative. Today, we celebrate Jayla Mapson, a dedicated nursing student from Elkridge, Maryland, who is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Temple University, Class of 2029.
Jayla’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and purpose. In November 2021, her life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with diabetes. For a high school student with a love for dancing, socializing, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures, the diagnosis came as a shock. It was a moment filled with uncertainty, fear, and the realization that her daily life would never be quite the same.
But it was during that difficult time that a nurse stepped in to offer more than just medical support. This nurse spoke to Jayla with kindness and hope, reminding her that many athletes, performers, and professionals live full, meaningful lives with diabetes. That conversation left a lasting impression. Inspired by the encouragement she received and the emotional care that accompanied the clinical treatment, Jayla found clarity in her purpose: she wanted to become a pediatric nurse. Her goal is to support children who, like her, face medical diagnoses that can feel overwhelming. She wants to help them heal not just physically, but emotionally as well.
In addition to her personal medical journey, Jayla has seen caregiving modeled at home. Watching her parents care for aging family members further deepened her desire to pursue a healthcare career built on empathy, service, and strength. Enrolling in Temple University’s highly regarded nursing program is the next step in turning that vision into reality.
Jayla’s gratitude is powerful and heartfelt. In her words, “Thank you so much for awarding me this scholarship as I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue to fund my education. After going through some financial and medical hardship within my family, this award means so much to my family and I, allowing me to pursue my dreams and goals!”
Her passion and clarity of purpose are exactly what the 25 Days of Scholarships campaign was designed to support. Jayla exemplifies the values of service, perseverance, and community-driven ambition that we aim to elevate through this program.
About the 25 Days of Scholarships
Launched in 2025, Pond Lehocky Giordano’s 25 Days of Scholarships is a nationwide campaign that awards $1,000 scholarships to 25 students pursuing higher education. The program is open to students enrolled in two- or four-year colleges, trade schools, or other accredited institutions. It is designed to reduce financial burdens so that students can focus on achieving their goals.
Throughout the month of June, each scholarship recipient is featured on our website and social media to celebrate their achievements and share their stories. These students are not only committed to academic success but also to making a meaningful impact in their communities.
